Vaccinating our children is so accepted, and done so automatically that some of us haven’t even stopped to think twice about the negative effects it could have.  I have chosen not to vaccinate my children, and I am very glad I was informed enough to make that decision. True, you will be given funny looks at the hospital when your baby is first born, and you may have to insist upon no vaccines. The nurses do it so automatically. You may also run into difficulty once your child is old enough to go to school. They will tell you that you have to vaccinate your child for them to go to school. However, make sure you know that you can get out of it by claiming a religious exemption. An alternative, however, would be homeschooling, where this will not be a problem.

Here are some facts from an ongoing study done in Germany comparing vaccinated to unvaccinated children. The numbers are based on around 7,500 surveys so far, and here are the remarkable results.

 

  • Less than 10 % of unvaccinated children suffer from allergies of any kind. This compares to 40% of vaccinated children in the US who are allergic to at least one thing, and 22.9% who have an allergic disease.
  • About .2% of unvaccinated children suffer from asthma. This compares to 14-15% of vaccinated children in Australia who have asthma, and 6% of American vaccinated children who have asthma.
  • Only 4 unvaccinated chilren out of 7500 reported severe autism. However, in all four cases, all mothers tested very high in mercury. In the US, about one vaccinated child out of 100 vaccinated children, suffers from this disease. One out of every 38 boys in the United Kingdom suffers from autism.

The Toxic Truth about Baby Mattresses

About 3,000 American babies die a year from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS. There are many factors that have seemed to increase or decrease the risk of SIDS, but even the experts cannot agree with what actually causes this tragedy. However, there has been studies done in New Zealand that are making it look as if  baby mattresses are making a toxic environment for them to sleep in, and is causing the phenomenon of SIDS.

In 1988, a British chemist named Barry Richardson was working with a company who made awnings and tents, and someone at the company mentioned that they used the same chemicals in their awning as the ones approved for baby mattresses.  These chemicals were phosphorus, used in the mattress cover, and arsenic and antimony, used as fire retardants in the mattresses. Now, these chemicals on their own are bad enough, but for some reason they were creating a toxic gas that could kill someone. What was the culprit? Scopulariopsis  Brevicaulis is a common household fungus, it starts to grow in warm, moist environments. Richardson determined that the fungus, once established in the baby’s mattress that had been spit up on, wet on, and sweat on, was feeding off of the chemicals in the mattress, and releasing a poisonous gas.  Richardson tested over 200 mattresses that SIDS babies had died on, they all contained this fungus. Once he had discovered this, he requested that 10,000 baby mattresses be wrapped in a special material that the gas could not get through. Not a single baby died on these wrapped mattresses.

SIDS has been slowed by the trend of putting babies to sleep on their backs, how does this relate to the toxic gas theory? The gas is very heavy, and when a baby is asleep on the belly, they are right next to where the gas would be on the outside of the mattress, and more likely to inhale a lethal dose. Keeping babies on their backs just gives them that much more space between them and the heavy gas.

Why do babies with fevers or who have just been vaccinated seem to be at a higher risk? Because the moisture from the sweat produced from fever makes the S. brevicauslis fungus grow at a very rapid rate, causing the release of more of the toxic gas. Vaccinated babies tend to get a fever, that is why they seem to be more at risk.

Why do babies between two months and a year old seem to be at the highest risk? It takes a few months for the fungus to establish itself in the mattress and feed off of the chemicals. Babies that are getting to be around a year old move around more, and when they sense a headache, which is being caused by the toxic gas, they would probably sit up, or stand up and start to fuss, getting them away from the fumes.

The best way to protect babies from SIDS is to keep them in a natural, safe environment. Mattresses that do not contain the chemicals phosphorus, arsenic and antimony, and organic cotton bedding are the best choices. Keep babies on their backs, and keep their room well ventilated. If one’s baby sleeps with the parents, make sure the adults’ mattress does not contain these chemicals, and that they are sleeping on organic bedding. Babies’ systems are too new and delicate to have to handle the horrible chemicals that could be exposed to them. Make sure they won’t have to, and keep the babies safe from SIDS.

Giving Saturated Fat its Reputation Back

Nothing has been demonized like saturated fat. These fats have the reputation of causing heart disease, high cholesterol, obesity, and pretty much every other disease known to man. Well, some of these diseases didn’t even exist when all people ate were butter, lard, coconut oil and other saturated fats. So what happened to start making fat so harmful to our health?

When margarine, liquid vegetable oils, and shortenings hit the market, fats took on a whole new nature. No longer was fat a natural product made from cream, animal fat, coconuts or olives. Now there was a lot of prosessing needed to be done to the fat to make it what it is. Back in the 19th century, butter was very expensive so the king asked chemists to come up with an alternative. The French chemist Mege Mouries came up with margarine in 1869. Doesn’t the fact that it took a chemist to create margarine scare you a little? Margarine is made with rancid vegetable oils such as cottonseed oil or canola oil, and it is processed until it is lumpy gray grease. Then it is bleached, colored and filled with synthetic vitamins. This is our healthy alternative to butter, which is made from cream and salt? Maybe this is why “fat” is causing so many diseases.

Anything saturated such as butter and other animal fats have been stripped from our diets. Yogurts are fat free, even” cream” is fat free! Our bodies, especially our brains cannot function without fats. These fats are also accused of causing obesity. Well, at least  50 % of my calorie intake every day comes from saturated fats. When I make popcorn I use coconut oil and butter, when I eat any starch such as potatoes or bread, I layer about a half an inch of butter on it, I fry everything in butter, lard, or olive oil. It goes on and on, I consume ridiculous amounts of saturated fat. I am not obese. I actually feel the most healthy when I eat this amount of fat. The fake fats like tubs of margarine, shortenings and hydrogenated oils, will cause someone to get obese, and lose their health. What I’ve told you here is just the tip of the iceburg, do a little research on your own, and discover what is actually done to these products to make them look edible.

What most people see as unhealthy indulgences are actually necessary for our wellbeing. Saturated fat is not part of the FDA’s food piramid, but who trusts the government anyways? Lets break the fat-free trend and get back to the way it used to be when people treated animal and healthy fats as a sacred food, necessary for survival.

 

 

Natural and Cheap Beauty Tips

The beauty industry will tell you anything to have you buy their product, and we all are fooled by the beautiful packaging. I admit I’m a sucker for the anticipation of opening a beauty product that promises beauty beyond imagination. Well, as we have all discovered, few of these products deliver on that promise. Here are a few ideas that I have actually tried, and really do work! They are cheap ideas, using what most people have in their cupboard, and they are non-toxic.

Hair. There are so many products out there promising to make your hair smooth and shiny. Most of these are very expensive, and are full of strange ingredients that we cannot pronounce. Well, here’s the secret that I’ve discovered and that really works. Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Massage about 1/4 cup of it into your hair and scalp in the evening. Cover with a shower cap, and go to bed. For those of us who are married, I usually don’t do it when my husband’s home, since I smell a little olivey that night!  In the morning, shampoo with a natural shampoo. All done. Do this about once a week, and your hair will stay smooth and shiny. I’ve tried other oils, and have found the olive oil to be the best.

Face. Microdermabrasion is the face repair trend, and we can pay a bundle to have it done professionally. The cheaper way to go is a product that exfolliates the skin on the face. However, these products can still be around 5o dollars, and some brands contain aluminum. I use baking soda. I make a paste with water and baking soda, or with my facial cleanser and baking soda, and exfolliate my face with it. The fine texture of the baking soda is not too harsh for the sensitive facial skin, and of course baking soda is safe. Rinse your face, moisturize, and your skin will be so smooth and glowing.

Body. This one is similar to the face. Please do not hand out lots of money for expensive body scrubs and sugar scrubs! You can make your own. Use your own natural body wash, no chemicals please, and add either salt or sugar. Using a good Celtic sea salt will add vital minerals to the scrub, making it even better. When you shower, just scrub your body, or use as a pre-shave scrub. Just exfolliate your legs, ladies, before you shave, and your shave will be closer, and last longer.

Get your olive oil, baking soda, sugar and salt out, and give these ideas a try. Like I said, I use them all and they work. Save yourself some money and know exactly what ingredients are in your beauty products.

Make your Traditional Christmas Recipes Healthier

Keeping things healthy around Christmastime is very difficult. We all have our traditional recipes that we make every year, and it wouldn’t feel like the Holidays unless we served them. I’m not one to ditch a tradition, so here are some ideas to make a few of your favorite holiday recipes a little bit less of a guilty pleasure.

Pecan pie. I love pecan pie, however, the amount of sugar in it is frightening. Decrease the sugar by about 25%, and use real maple syrup instead of corn syrup. The maple flavor will knock your socks off, and it’s so much better for you.

Pastry crust. Never use shortening in your pie crust. Actually, never use shortening ever! It has the nutritional qualities of axle grease. Use butter or lard in your crust. Butter has the best flavor, and lard is super easy to work with. They are both great choices.

Pecan pie.

Toffee, caramel corn and other candies. Replace any recipe that calls for corn syrup with maple syrup. The real stuff.

Quick breads, muffins and cakes. Liquid oil makes any quick bread or cake super moist. Unfortunately,one of the only healthful liquid oils is extra virgin olive oil. This sounds gross, and it will smell a little strong in the batter, but once it is baked there will be no olive taste at all. The texture will be incredibly moist.

If you decrease the sugar in your recipes, replace some of the white sugar with other options such as maple syrup or honey, and replace bad fats with nutritional fats like butter, lard, extra virgin olive oil, and coconut oil, you will be making these holiday treats quite a bit more healthful, and in my opinion, they will taste even better.

Everyone wants the no-effort diet that does not require us to move a muscle, or stop eating whatever we want. Unfortunately, that just isn’t possible. Here are three simple tricks to make losing weight seem effortless, however.

First, stop drinking anything that has sugar in it. If we knew how many calories we guzzle down, and how fast they’re gone, we’d weep! I figure, if I’m going to consume 400 calories in one sitting, it better be a nice size piece of cheesecake, and not one bottle of soda. Some people drink several sodas a day, so it’s possible to be drinking around 1000 calories a day, depending on how many drinks of course, and never even realize it. Need to kick the soda habit? Buy seltzer water, squeeze lemon into it, stir in a little honey, and just make the adjustment. Or even better for you, make your own soda with water kefir grains. I make my own yogurt, serve myself about one cup, put it in a large glass, fill the glass the rest of the way with milk,  stir it and drink it down. If you take vitamins this is the perfect consistency to make it easier. That’s it, that’s my breakfast and it keeps me full until lunch. I actually eat a smaller lunch when I have this for breakfast.

Third, always eat your vegetables and meat first at mealtimes. After this, you probably won’t have a bunch of room for the carbs and sweet dessert. If you do, you’ll eat less of them. White breads, rices, other grains and sugar are empty calories with no nutritional value, and actually harmful to your health.
